Commonly asked questions about Sedation Dentistry…

Q. Will I feel any pain?
A. No. You will feel nothing!

Q. Will I be unconscious?
A. No, you will be in a deeply relaxed state, but you will be responsive.

Q. Will I be monitored?
A. Yes, one of our team members will constantly be with you, and your vital signs will be monitored during the entire visit. You will never be alone.

Q. How long will I be snoozing?
A. Depending on your needs, from 2 to 6 hours.

Q. Will someone need to accompany me?
A. Yes, due to the sedative effects of the medication, someone must to drive you to and from our office.

Nitrous Oxide (or laughing gas) is one of the safest forms of sedation, and it can take the anxiety out of most routine dental procedures, even cleanings. Non-allergenic and non-irritating, most patients feel the onset of effects within minutes. Nitrous oxide is administered through a simple rubber hood that rests on your nose and provides a feeling of security and warmth.

Because it is extremely safe, almost anyone can have nitrous oxide. We can vary the depth of sedation depending on your level of anxiety. Most importantly, you will bask in a feeling of relaxation as your dental care is completed.

Sedation Dentistry

At Southeast Family Dental, your comfort is our first concern! We understand that some patients experience anxiety at the thought of visiting the dentist. Dr. Bohnert can help. He offers safe, effective sedation methods to promote comfort and take the stress out of dental visits. We believe that once you’ve experienced sedation dentistry with Dr. Bohnert, you’ll never be afraid to go to the dentist again.

What is sedation dentistry?
Sedation dentistry involves the use of a commonly prescribed sedative to eliminate anxiety and create a sense of complete calm. You’ll take the sedative prior to your appointment. By the time you arrive at our dental office, you’ll be drowsy, so please have a friend or family member drive you to and from your appointment. We’ll seat you in a treatment chair and give you a warm blanket before we begin your procedures. Your vital signs will be monitored at all times.

Your sedation will make you unaware of treatment details but able to converse with Dr. Bohnert and our team. You’ll emerge gradually from your oral sedation with little or no memory of your time at our office. Sedation dentistry lets Dr. Bohnert potentially perform several procedures in a single session. People with busy schedules can get the dental care they need, easily and quickly.

Imagine turning back the clock on your oral health so that you can smile with confidence and chew without pain. No wonder so many patients say, “Sedation dentistry changed my life.”

Who is a candidate for sedation dentistry?
Almost anyone may qualify, including people who:

  • Experience mild to extreme dental anxiety
  • Have had a past traumatic dental experience
  • Experience difficulty getting numb
  • Have a sensitive gag reflex or extreme dental sensitivity
  • Don’t like the sounds, smells, and tastes associated with a dental office
  • Need lengthy or complex dental treatments
  • Have put off dental care because of time constrains
  • Dislike needles and injections

In addition to oral sedation, Dr. Bohnert also offers nitrous oxide.
