The truth is, everyone is at risk for oral cancer. Whether you’re a 20-year-old-college student, a 40-year-old executive, or an active senior citizen, anyone can get oral cancer. However, there are some risk factors that increase your chances of getting this deadly disease.

Know the risk factors

  • Smoking, vaping, chewing tobacco
  • Excessive consumption of alcohol
  • Exposure to HPV (Human papillomavirus)

But, just because you do not smoke or drink excessively, does not mean you are not at risk. Over 25 percent of oral cancers occur in people who do not smoke and who only drink occasionally.

  • White or red patches of tissue
  • Sores that bleed easily
  • Abnormal lumps
  • A chronic sore throat
  • A mass or lump in the neck
