Hi, this is Dr. Holly Austgen with Southeast Family Dental. Today we are going to discuss fluoride treatments in adults. Yes, kids are not the only ones that can benefit from fluoride!

Fluoride is not only found in the materials your dentist uses but it is also found in food, toothpastes, mouth-rinses and even tap water that has been found to make teeth more resistant to attacks from acids and sugars in our diet.

Many of you probably remember having fluoride treatments as a child in the dental chair, but when we become adults these are done less and less often. There are some great benefits to continuing fluoride treatments as an adult. While it may not be important for everyone to continue fluoride treatments, there are some that will benefit.

As teeth come in to the mouth they are most susceptible to getting cavities and this is why children receive fluoride at each appointment. But there are some adults that because of poor oral hygiene, dietary habits, sensitivity, recession or dry mouth would benefit and are more prone to cavities as well. In these cases, we often recommend an in office fluoride treatment which would be done at each cleaning and sometimes, in extreme cases, having our patients use toothpaste with higher levels of fluoride than can be found in the stores.

If you have any questions about fluoride and to see if it is a good option for you, please contact our office at 317-359-8000. This is Dr. Austgen with Southeast Family Dental and remember, we can make you smile.
