Feeling nervous about visiting the dentist? It’s natural, and you are definitely not alone.

Dental anxiety affects millions of people and, in moderate to severe cases, can stand in the way of getting the care you need. At Southeast Family Dental, Dr. Katie Jones and our caring team understand how real that fear can be. To help put every patient at ease, we offer gentle, customized solutions to help you feel safe, heard, and comfortable. One of the most effective options for easing anxiety is IV sedation, a safe and controlled way to make your dental experience smooth and stress-free.

What Is IV Sedation?

Intravenous, or “IV” sedation, involves administering sedative medication directly into an individual’s bloodstream. Patients remain conscious under IV sedation, but are deeply relaxed. Most patients remember very little (if anything) about the procedure afterward. IV sedation is an excellent option for longer treatments (like extractions or root canals), severe anxiety, or a strong gag reflex.

IV Sedation: What to Expect

The IV sedation process begins well before your treatment. First, during a consultation with Dr. Jones, you will discuss your medical history, learn about the process, and get to ask any questions you have.

The sedation takes effect quickly and is carefully monitored throughout your visit. You can rest assured you’re in skilled, compassionate hands from start to finish. The effects of IV sedation typically last 4 to 6 hours, though some grogginess or mild drowsiness may linger into the rest of the day. Even though you may feel “awake” shortly after the procedure, your reflexes, coordination, and judgment can remain impaired for several hours.

As a result, it’s neither safe nor legally permitted in many places for patients to drive themselves after IV sedation. You absolutely must have someone take you home after receiving IV sedation.
