Dentures and Partials

A smiling man looking at his new denturesThe initial adjustment to new dentures typically takes several weeks. During this time, your mouth adapts to the new appliance while you develop confidence in speaking and eating. Remember that this adjustment period is normal and temporary—with patience and practice, your dentures will begin to feel natural.

Speak and Eat Confidently

Start with soft foods cut into small pieces, gradually introducing more challenging foods as you become comfortable. Practice speaking by reading aloud in private, focusing on words you stumble on. Many patients find that using a small amount of denture adhesive during the adjustment period provides extra security while they develop confidence.

Managing Initial Challenges

You may experience increased saliva production or minor soreness during the first few weeks. This is completely normal. Rinse with warm salt water to soothe irritation and maintain regular follow-up appointments at Southeast Family Dental.

If you notice any persistent sore spots, contact our office promptly—minor adjustments can significantly improve your comfort. Rest assured, Southeast Family Dental is committed to ongoing support to ensure success in transitioning to dentures.

Missing teeth can make you avoid smiling and going out with friends, and when you have gaps in your smile, you may not be able to eat healthy foods or speak properly.

Fortunately, dentures are an economical way to replace your missing teeth, and after your mouth adjusts, you can enjoy your favorite meals without worry!

Can I Eat Normally With Dentures?

The good news is that you can eat normally with dentures, but during the first few weeks, you’ll need to adjust to your new teeth by following these tips:

  • Eat soft foods — Prepare foods such as eggs, yogurt, and mashed potatoes.
  • Take small bites — Chew slowly and evenly on both sides of your mouth, taking smaller bites than normal.
  • Avoid sticky and hard foods — Don’t eat foods like nuts, crusty bread, steak, caramels, and popcorn.
  • Avoid hot foods — Your dentures won’t warn you when food is too hot, so be careful about food temperature.
